Watching this movie scene was my first ever encounter with strata, and despite knowing about this dish for years, I’ve never actually HAD a strata – until now. But anyone who HAS watched it will remember the infamous scene with a strata – a breakfast casserole that gets knocked out of SJP’s hands, causing a total meltdown by her character in the movie. It’s filled with horribly cringe-worthy-but-can’t-stop-watching scenes and over-the-top personalities that you either love or hate (I personally love the movie even if Sarah Jessica Parker’s character can drive me insane). When you eat it, just don't think about all the cheese and cream that goes in it.The Family Stone is one of the most polarizing Christmas movies that exists. It was delicious and will be made again in the future. We eat this with fresh navel orange sections and Mimosas!! I would love to know the nutritional information because I always have some leftover and reheat small quantities after the holidays when I'm back on my healthy eating plan. My sister has been making this for our family on Christmas morning for years and it is what I look forward to. Time consuming and the kitchen was a mess when I finished, but it was worth the cleanup! I made this for Easter morning, and it was sooo good.

2) one sour dough loaf crust left on 3) 9 eggs 4) use less cheese and switched up type of cheese - 1/2 c fontina, 1/2 c grated romano and parrano cheeses 5) whisked 6 oz goat cheese into egg mixture along with all the spices. made the following changes based on reading through the feedback:1) veggie only - added sauted leeks/spinach/garlic, blanched asparagus and roasted red peppers. I risked making it for family for the first time and it was a success. This is easily the best strata I've ever had, and my most preferred way to have goat cheese. And, if you're like me, it can last you several meals. usually around $50 depending on the quality of the cheese, but it's so so so so worth it. I originally thought it had pasta in it, because the bread is so tender and baked into the eggs and cheese. and it took about a millisecond for me to know I had to have the recipe. The first time I tasted this strata I had no idea what was inside. Fantastic flavors, and it makes Christmas morning so easy! It is a must for my family, and it just wouldn't be Christmas without it. I have made this strata every Christmas since it's printing in 1997. This tasted good but there are a many more strata recipes out there that are much easier to make, less mess, less cleanup - that taste as good or better. The ham and artichokes provide some, so adding 1 1/2 tsp is too much for my taste. I have made this twice now and gotten rave reviews both times. It's delicious served with a fresh fruit salad and a glass of Prosecco! It is a bit pricey and a bit rich but for a once a year treat, that's ok. This has become our traditional Christmas morning breakfast ever since we found the recipe in Bon Appetit in December 1997. Used canned artichoke bottoms (and cut them into bite sized pieces) in order to avoid the potential for woody leaves - turned out beautifully. Layered the hash browns instead if the bread/milk combo and it turned out amazing! I only used fresh thyme for the herb based on other reviews.ĭecadent, deep flavors. It's very salty, so soak the ham and/or leave out the salt.Īlso - it makes way more than eight servings (I always serve it with a salad and often sauteed cherry tomatoes).Īmazing recipe! I replaced the bread with shredded hash browns omitting the milk and increasing the cream to two cups. Love this recipe, and have made it at least a dozen or more times.
